The goal of the Summit program is to assist young Texans who desire to learn more about leadership, ethics and public service. It is an annual opportunity for a limited selection of young men and women from across Texas. These students are housed at UT-Permian Basin during a week-long training devoted to improving and rewarding the leadership of students. Successful applicants must have attended an S.O.S. Program, completed their service project, provide letters of recommendation from their school and a community leader (one each), submit an essay and exhibit exemplary leadership skills. As a result of their week-long training, Shepperd Scholars can further develop the needed skill sets to lead successfully.
The Summit’s Program Coordinators play an integral role in facilitating the week’s activities, inspiring Shepperd Scholars to develop a lifelong love of leadership. The program is specifically designed to incorporate practical leadership skills, encourage growth in leadership through various exercises, and to enable the students to practice leadership qualities. Additionally, they learn the value of networking while establishing friendships with individuals from all areas of the state. They spend time with speakers who are leaders in the community and enjoy the many activities in West Texas.
